| Pains are usually associated with injury or some disease.
Pains are of various intensities like acute pain, chronic non-malignant pain and chronic malignant pain. Each kind of pain has an associated reason. Pain is a signal to the body that some part needs repair.
You must first diagnose as to the cause of the pain and then decide on the analgesic. For the diagnosis of pain you must be able to distinguish between the different kinds of pain and be able to express where the origin of the pain actually is.
The pain killers
Analgesics work on bones, joints, muscles and nerves. They may reduce the pain or cut off pain altogether. You must be careful regarding the composition of the medications and avoid those which contain narcotics. Some medications like Ultram work topically on the brain and spinal cord and decrease the pain you would other wise feel. Soma and other such medications focus on the muscle pains and strains and plug the complete pain signal and thus you hardly feel the pain. Celebrex and Bextra act on the joints and helps arthritis ridden patients with a pain-free movement. As the pain increases some people also have a tendency to develop a sense of helplessness which drives the need for a double drug treating you for both the pain and the associated mental distress, like Neurontin.
