| Do you know that your bones are gradually losing its mass? It is only awaiting an accident and you will see the dire consequences. This is not to frighten you, rather we want you to be aware of the phenomenon of osteoporosis.
What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is the gradual decrease in the bone mass which may lead to fractures. The most affected areas are the hip, spine and wrist. And coincidentally these are the very areas which suffer when you fall anywhere accidentally. Osteoporosis usually affects during the late years of one's life. Women's health is four times more susceptible to osteoporosis than men. With menopause setting in the bones lose calcium as the hormonal balance is disturbed.
Osteoporosis is caused due to deficiency of calcium in the body, vitamin D deficiency, old age, menopause, alcohol intake and smoking. This causes very deep fractures and sometimes it may cause deformity and even decrease in height.
Treatment
The medications available for osteoporosis are mostly hormone replacements. In women who are past menopause, they may take estrogen replacement patches and restore the bone mass. You may use alendronates (Brand name: Fosamax) which has been prescribed the world over and is known to increase the bone mass. The other way is to supplement the calcitonin level in the body with a synthetic additive. It helps the body to produce bone cells rapidly. Besides these medications a proper diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is a must with proper exercise regimen to help reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
