| The force which the blood exerts on the blood vessels is called blood pressure. If blood pressure goes either way it means trouble. The normal blood pressure is 80/120 mm of mercury. Though higher and lower blood pressures compared to the normal are bad for you, it is the high blood pressure which is feared.
Why is high blood pressure dangerous?
High blood pressure affects the heart very badly. It wears down the heart muscles and thus the extremities like the brain and the legs do not get a proper blood circulation. A high blood pressure can also affect the kidney and the liver badly as the fluid pressure increases. High blood pressure or hypertension can occur due to various reasons. It can be due to the clotting of blood, cholesterol build up in the blood vessels or constriction of the blood vessels.
How do I lower my blood pressure?
The medications used to lower hypertension or high blood pressures are called hypertensive medicines. They are of various kinds:
- Diuretics: This helps you get rid of extra water in the body and so reduces the load of the blood vessels
- Beta blockers: these drugs blocks the effects of adrenaline
- Alpha blockers: these drugs help the blood vessels to remain open and thus reduce blood pressure
- ACE inhibitors: it prevents the body from making Angiotensin II which blocks blood vessels. Cozaar is among the popular ACE inhibitors.
- Calcium channel blockers: Drugs like norvasc belong to this group and block calcium ions entering your cells.
- Combinations: there are medications of the mixed type which effectively lower blood pressure.
